Issue: I’m an Office 365 subscriber and my OneNote 2016 is suddenly deinstalled, replaced with the OneNote App. How can I undo this?
I was quite confused, when OneNote 2016 was suddenly gone. Searching for it in Windows only reveals the OneNote App (which I do not like). As I had no intention in configuring and using the OneNote App, I tried to roll back to OneNote 2016.
Since there are news of Microsoft switching OneNote officially to the app and all other Office tools remain untouched, I can only suspect foul play of some Windows / Office update. When contacting support they just advised rerunning the Office Installer. However this did not have any impact at all. The application “My Office”, which acts as a storefront for running and installing all Office tools included in a subscription, displayed OneNote to be installed. Running this only starts the app, though. To avoid a complete reinstallation I have then deinstalled the app in Windows and “My Office” displayed an “install” button, next to OneNote. However this will only install the app again.
The solution was to deinstall the OneNote App and rerun the Office Installer, which then shows the icon for OneNote (which it did when running it with the app installed). Simple as that OneNote 2016 is back.
